Nine of Swords

A figure sits bolt upright in bed in the dark, face buried in both hands, while nine swords hang horizontally along the black wall. The quilt is embroidered with roses and zodiac signs — comfort lying unnoticed across the lap.

★ Upright

The Nine of Swords is the 3 a.m. card — anxiety, guilt, and dread doing their loudest work in the quietest hours. Upright, it takes the anguish seriously while pointing out its geometry: every sword hangs on the wall; none of them are in the bed. Most of what is attacking you tonight is a rehearsal, not an event. Speak it aloud to someone in daylight and watch it shrink.

♺ Reversed

Reversed, the night begins to end: worries voiced, help sought, the discovery that the feared thing was survivable or imaginary. It can also mark torment kept secret past its expiry date. Open the curtains — shame dies in the same light worry does.
