The Devil
A horned, bat-winged figure squats on a black pedestal, an inverted pentagram above its brow. Chained to the pedestal stand a man and a woman — naked, horned, and tailed — but the chains around their necks are loose enough to lift off.
★ Upright
The Devil is bondage with a key in the lock. Upright, it names the addiction, contract, relationship, debt, or belief that holds you — and points out, uncomfortably, that the chain is slack. It is also raw materialism and appetite, worth honoring in proportion. The card does not condemn desire; it asks who owns whom.
♺ Reversed
Reversed, the chains are coming off: breaking a habit, leaving a controlling situation, calling the bluff of a fear that ran your decisions. It can also warn that a loosened grip is quietly re-tightening. Freedom, this card insists, is not an event but a practice.
